ANANT AGARWAL- Photographer

A world without photography would be meaningless because we will not be able to relive those passionate, precious and joyful moments of the past through the photographs. One cannot physically go back in past but through photography you can relive the past. I try to portray through my work what the heart feels and not what the eyes see.

As a young boy I would love to read and re-read my grandfather’s memoirs from his motorcycle trip across the ‘Post-Independence India’ of the ‘50s. And more than the narratives, the pictures caught my attention. The portraits, landscapes, sceneries all belonging to a long-gone era, preserved in monochrome. When I got a camera of my own, I knew from that very moment that this would be my life’s path.

Photography has taken me to varied locales. I’ve met people across the social fabric of India and realized that each person has a story so distinct from the other! I’ve captured some candid moments of the street  dwellers and that also of the ‘sadhus’ undertaking their pilgrimage to the mighty Himalayas.
I’ve eaten with Tibetan refugees while they narrated their tales of exiles in a foreign land. I’ve chased clouds, birds and elusive wild animals.
All of this ingrained in me a sense of patience and modesty which has shaped me as a person. And in this constant process of ‘making a photograph’ I’ve learnt to use my camera to build, capture and preserve stories.

A number of my works have been featured in various publications such as the Times of India,

the Hindustan Times, Nikon-Germany, Air Asia Travel Magazine, Better Photography Magazine and Smart Photography Magazine to name a few. I’ve also worked with  organizations like INTACH (which is in close association with the UNITED NATIONS). With more than 10 years of experience in the photographic field and having an eye for creativity and art I try to utilize it all on the field. My philosophy while making a picture can be excellently summarized by one of my most favorite quotes from Henry Cartier Bresson: “Think about the photo before and after, never during. The secret is to take your time. You mustn’t go too fast. The subject must forget about you. Then, however, you must be very quick.”

After graduating from Symbiosis Law School, Pune I decided to pursue my career in photography  instead. Currently I’m working as a   professional photographer in Dehradun under the banner of Lights And Shadows Studios trying to raise the standards of photography in the city.
