Ways to calm your precious one…

1. Calm music…

2. A ride in the car…

3. YouTube….some sensory video…

4. I usually sing a couple of lullabies and read his books…

5. Our little guy calms with a battery-powered head massager… works every time…

6. In school, I give mine a tight hug, a little message on her arms, and sing her favourite song…Then, I take her for a walk in the hallway where it is quiet.

7. Mug of tea with a snack, and walking for 20-30 minutes works for me…

8. My son likes deep pressure…I give him strong squeezing cuddles and it calms him down right away…

9. A foot massage often works wonders!

10. A ‘calm down’ room or space, fill it with sensory items…lights, tent, swing, stuffed animals…

11.Weighted blankets/clothes…

12. Electronics…slime…bubbles…pinwheels….spinners…fidget cubes…

13.Teach by example… lower your own tone and compose yourself first. Get down to eye level with the kid…hold his face in your hand and tell him that you are there for him. All he needs is reassurance.

14. Stay calm and talk to them in a calm voice… 15. Not all children with autism want to be hugged. Some of them have extreme sensory overload…they like to be left alone!!
