Bollywood films have always glorified white-colour costumes in their Holi songs. Be it in the eternal Holi anthem, ‘Rang Barse Bheege Chunarwali’, where Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha have sported white outfits or in the latest fun-filled number, ‘Go Paagal’ with Akshay Kumar and Huma Qureshi, bringing out the craziness of the festival in their white ensembles, the colour white, has always ruled the roost for Holi in Bollywood films.

With the widely enjoyed festival of colours just around the corner, it is time to indulge in some stylish, yet comfy fashion, again this year. Here is a lowdown on how to carry the suitable look, even as you enjoy the water cannon fights and get smeared in a kaleidoscope of hues.

Colour colour, which colour?:    Choose whites or pastel colour ensembles for this occasion. Only in these light-coloured outfits, you can flaunt the colours smeared on you luridly. You can either wear a white kurta and pair it with denims or opt for a pair of white palazzos with a tank top or tee shirt. Ideally, an all-white outfit is the attire for the occasion, but if it is hard for you to pull off a white-and-white outfit, then consider pastel shades.

Embrace cotton fabrics:     Opt for quick-dry fabrics, and stay away from chiffons and georgettes. Cotton is essentially the best material to be adorned for Holi. Look for comfortable cotton dresses to carry off the right look for the festival. Cotton outfits will ensure that even in a drenched state, your outfit won’t get as translucent and cling to your body. You can pair a sleeveless white kurti with a coloured wide bottom (palazzo or skirt) and make a striking statement. However, if you want to cut down your skin’s exposure to harsh colours, then the safest bet would be to opt for a full sleeves kurta or a plain white t-shirt, with a crushed cotton palazzo or jeans.

Style inspiration:      For those looking at tinsel-town style inspirations, you can take a cue from B-Town’s Huma Qureshi, and pick up a white kurta and a white skirt with a bright-coloured dupatta, like she did in Go Paagal. You can also wear a floor-length kurta-like dress to get that perfect festival fashion look. How about a loose t-shirt in bright shades with hot pants, just like svelte beauty Deepika Padukone did in the peppy Holi track, Balam Pichkari? You can also slip into breezy kaftans to get that desired look, just perfect for Holi. Make sure you feel comfortable in your outfit with or without water and colours.

Use minimal make-up and striking accessories:     Sport striking accessories for a festival like Holi. Colour-popping accessories will enhance your all-white appearance. For a desi look, try beaded danglers or jhumkas. Go for minimal make-up, as it is likely to smear due to water. Guard your skin against the harsh colours by applying some oil or moisturizer on your skin. Also, use a good sunscreen lotion with SPF 50 to protect your skin from drying out while playing with colours.
